The
power steering hose transports high-pressure power steering fluid between the
power steering pump and
the power steering rack. There are two types of power steering hoses-high pressure hoses that transport fluid from the pump to the rack and low pressure hoses that transport fluid from the rack to the pump. If you smell burning oil under the hood of a car, you may be able to determine the hose leak. This is usually accompanied by difficult steering of the vehicle.
How to fix the power steering hose leak:
You should stop when the engine is running and raise the hood. For safety, please engage the emergency brake and put the gear in the parking position.
It is easy to identify where the leak occurred because you can see the liquid spraying out. Since this sprayed liquid can cause a fire, you should not drive a car with a leaking hose even without power steering.
If you cannot replace it on the highway, turn off the engine and try to repair the hose leak.
To perform power steering hose repair, cut the damaged part of the hose with a sharp knife.
Use 2 hose clamps on each side of the hose and use the brass knob on each clamp to connect the hoses together. Make sure that the clamp is tight. Remember that the clamp should not be too tight, as this will strip the threads of the hose.
After connecting the hose, replace it to the correct position.
Because the hose is damaged and the power steering fluid leaks, it is necessary to refill the fluid.
After replacing the power steering fluid, you can start the engine and test for further leaks.
You must remember that this is a temporary repair and make sure to replace the hose as soon as possible.
Power steering hose replacement:
Turn off the car engine.
Remove the hose on the power steering gear and let the power steering fluid drain into the disc.
Loosen and remove the fittings holding the hoses to the pump and steering gear.
Next, cover the pump and gear accessories and remove all clamps connecting the hose to the chassis.
Remove the hose from the chassis and replace the O-ring at the end of the hose.
Then, install the new power steering hose by connecting the hose to the chassis and attaching the clamp that fixes it to the chassis.
Then, after opening the cover of the pump and steering gear, fix the hose joints to the pump and steering gear.
Finally, reconnect the hose on the power steering device.
The pump should be filled with power steering fluid until the recommended level mark is reached.
When everything is ready, you can start the engine and check for leaks.
Power steering uses hydraulic principles. This puts a lot of pressure on the hose and wears the rubber. Therefore, the power steering hose of your car must be checked regularly by a mechanic and replaced when needed.
